Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, issued the following statement following passage of a new rule in the Senate requiring a two-thirds vote of the chamber on procedural motions prior to final passage of bills creating new taxes. The rule, proposed by Sens. Ericksen and Michael Baumgartner, R-Spokane, was approved by a vote of the Senate on the opening day of the 2015 Legislature.

“Washington voters have repeatedly said they want taxes to be our last resort, and a two-thirds voting requirement is the best way to do it. Today we found a way to extend that supermajority protection in the most important area – the creation of new taxes. The voters have told us five times that they want this protection and I’m glad we found a way to deliver.”
