State Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, offered the following reaction following the Senate’s vote Feb. 5 not to confirm the appointment of Lynn Peterson as secretary of transportation:

“Back in 2003 we changed the law so that the governor would appoint the secretary of transportation and the Senate would confirm. We did it because we wanted to put a direct trail of authority and responsibility and accountability in place. And that is the role we are exercising today – to hold the executive branch accountable for the results we are getting.

“Those who believe DOT is moving in the right direction voted to confirm Secretary Peterson. But the rest of us believe the culture of the agency has gotten worse and the state can do better, and it is time we had new leadership at the Department of Transportation.”
