Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, said today he is gratified by the news that state transportation dollars for the West Bakerview Overpass have been awarded.
“This is a long overdue project,” Ericksen said. “I see it as the first of many improvements that we need to make to the I-5 corridor in Whatcom County to bring about prosperity and growth for our private-sector employers and the creation of jobs for our citizens.”
The state Transportation Improvement Board contacted the City of Bellingham today regarding its decision to award $1.5 million for the project.
“Good news travels fast,” Ericksen said. “I would like to thank local community groups and the many individuals that worked with me and other elected officials to get this project funded.”
Ericksen said a re-build of the interchange, which would be the best answer, is too expensive.
“I thank the state Department of Transportation and the TIB for their willingness to work with us on an affordable alternative. Congratulations to the City of Bellingham, the county, the port and the Whatcom Council of Governments for helping to identify a lesser-cost solution.”
